Opinion - Are Cannabinoids the real Limitless pill we've been waiting for?

Cannabinoids are becoming evermore fashionable these days and are generally well known throughout popular media. Awareness, attributed to the growing attention and legalisation of medicinal and recreational Cannabis around the world, means more people are developing an interest in cannabis usage for medical and recreational purposes. Many are interested in the effect it has on the body and how it can offer them certain benefits.

What are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids occur naturally in our bodies and synthesised to regulate homeostasis in our central, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Phytocannabinoids refer to chemical molecules discovered in the cannabis plant with a similar effect to the endocannabinoids naturally found in our body.

These cannabinoids bind to receptors found throughout the entire mammalian body (including you, your cat and your dog) and are what prompts the cannabinoid receptor into action. There are two types of cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2 – typically found throughout our body and vital organs.

Of the many cannabinoids known about, Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydracannabnioid (THC) assume a crucial role in how our body responds to Cannabis as they balance and regulating many bodily functions.

This indispensable relationship between cannabinoids and receptors in our body assumes a crucial role in how well we work. They can balance and regulate many bodily functions, directing our state of mind, memory, rest and even creativity.

Limitless pills vs Cannabinoids.

If you've heard of NZT48, then you'll have seen Limitless, a film about a guy called Eddie, popping $800 magic pills to increase his IQ, success, and his attempt to win the game of life. Recently, Modafinil, a study drug on the rise in universities, has been described by some as a real-world limitless pill. But is it a real-world limitless pill?

Often used for intense study and concentration, reports suggest Modafinil has the same effect on the brain as other drugs like cocaine and amphetamines. Just like Bradley Cooper's character, popping Modafinil (twice daily) can come with real negative consequences. With an effect similar to dangerous drugs, some users have reported side effects such as headaches or an overactive sex drive. And with potentially damaging effects on the brain, Modafinil cannot be considered as the real-world limitless pill and should not be used at all for those dreaming of turning fiction into reality.

Because cannabinoid receptors are discovered everywhere throughout the body, the potential remedial advantages from plant-derived cannabinoids are across the board.

Today, more valuable scientific evidence points to links between cannabinoids and understanding their role in preventing spasms and convulsion. Cannabidiol (CBD), has been the focus of much scientific research, has been shown to fill in as a panacea for many people looking for a natural alternative to pharmaceuticals. CBD is odourless, tasteless, non-toxic, non-psychoactive. So it is reasonable to consider why this natural plant supplement is favoured when contrasted with a cocktail of daily pharmaceuticals.

However, most people don't just benefit from CBD alone. Due to the abundance of CB1 receptor in our body, CB1 receptor regulation may bring additional therapeutic benefits in the human body when combined with THC. As CB1 receptors can down-regulate the release of Glutamate in our synapse, this can suppress synaptic firing and lower the sensitivity of connecting neurons. Glutamate is a critical neurotransmitter that encourages the spread of seizures, by activating the CB1 receptor, we can suppress the arrival of Glutamate and direct the synapse into normal functioning.

Cannabinoids and the ECS appear to trigger and regulate a very complex network of organ, tissue, and cell-specific signalling pathways, explaining the broad impact of CB1 receptor activation on many different behaviours. Some claim THC can even slow time perception. Perhaps that's why Jazz musicians, dancers, skateboarders, snowboarders are known to rely on Cannabis to help calm the nerves before performing. With the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoids potential benefits are truly limitless.
